In 2017-2018, the plant-based cheese industry grew 43%, with $124 million in sales (according to PBFA-commissioned Nielson data). Below are the companies contributing to that figure; from the the major market players, the small local businesses catering to their community and everything in between. Whatever the size of their company, they're delivering to consumers products packed with flavour!


Touted to be a $3.5 billion industry by 2023 (according to a report compiled by Market Research Future (MRF)), the plant-based cheese market is set to be on a profitable track fuelled by consumer demand. The demand for products that are free of nasties, and delivering environmentally-friendly goodness.

Dr. Cow


Environmentally conscious Brooklyn-based business, Dr. Cow, is run by Veronica Schwartz and Pablo Castro. They produce organic, raw vegan cheese.

Treeline Treenut Cheese


Founded by Michael Schwarz, Treeline Treenut Cheeses are vegan, kosher, probiotic, paleo and made from cashews.

The cheese is known to be creamy, and can be found in Wholefoods, Kroger and many other independent stores - totalling 3000 stores. Their info can be found on their website, here.

15 years ago, Field Roast’s Chao Creamery created its first product. Their dairy-free cheese are made out of fermented tofu, fresh tofu, shiro miso paste, fresh garlic and seasonings, and blended green herbs. 


Their product line currently includes 3 cheese slice flavours and 2 macaroni and cheese, and can be bought from various stores all over the US, or via their online retailers.

This is the first vegan cheese brand to be placed exclusively in the Whole Foods dairy department! All of Kite Hill products are made out of fresh nut milk, from their buttery smooth ricotta, artisanal cream cheese spreads, creamy mylk yogurts, entrees, and drinks.


Vegans may seek comfort in knowing that one of the brains behind this team is Tal Ronnen (a vegan superstar chef). Their products can be found at Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target and various other stores in the US.

Miyoko's Kitchen produces cheese wheels, vegan butter, vegan mozzarella, vegan cream cheese and vegan roadhouse cheese spreads. Their products can be found in Kroger, Whole Foods, Trade Joe's and various other stores.

Vtopian Artisan Cheeses


Founded and co-owned by Imber Lingard, Vtopian Artisan Cheeses produces cultured cashew cheeses that are hand-crafted in Portland, Oregon.

Currently sold in selected stores around US and Canada, there are few online stores that you can buy it on - without ever having to leave your home!  


One of the biggest players in the market, Daiya has a huge range of products that are not only dairy-free, but also soy, gluten, eggs, peanuts, fish and shellfish.


Founded by Andre and Greg, the long-time friends  debuted their first 2 products, Daiya Cheddar Style and Mozzarella Style Shreds at the Natural Products Expo West. Now, Daiya has over 30 products!

In 2015, Hochland Group (headquartered in Heimenkirch, Germany) launched a  subsidiary company called E. V. A. GmbH. Their first products under the brand name "Simply V" rolled out in October 2015.


Hochland is a family-owned German food manufacturer and one of the largest private cheese manufacturers in Europe.  They decided to venture into the vegan cheese market as  "26 % of German consumers say they eat a vegan meal at least once a while".

Made predominately out of nuts (mainly almonds), you can find their products in Germany and Austria.

Simply v



Founded by Ryan Salomone and Laurice Do, Parmela Creamery is touted as cheese for foodies - especially if you're a pizza lover.


With 14 products under their belt, they're a small but mighty company. Their cheeses are cultured using traditional dairy techniques that have been tailored to nuts. Their blue cheese is "first cultured with a lactic bacteria, and aged with the same Roquefortti mold used in dairy. It has the distinct Blue flavor and rich flavor." 

With a price point that is comparable to the dairy cheese out on the shelves, you may want to find them in the nearest stores near you!

Parmela Creamery


Follow Your Heart.png

In 1970, 4 friends decided to open a health food store in metro Los Angeles called "Follow Your Heart". 40 years later, the health food store has evolved to a product brand name that's known in most plant-based households.


For over a decade, Follow Your Heart has been producing soy-based cheeses. Many health-conscious consumers would be pleasantly surprised to know that their classic recipe is made with over 70% organic ingredients! 

Their 53 products can now be found in stores all over the United States.

This vegan cheese can be found under one of Uhrenholt's 3 brands, Emborg. According to the website, the dairy company developed vegan cheese due to popular demand.


With 45% of Swedish people eating vegetarian food at least once a week, Uhrenholt expects there to be a growing demand in this segment as 25% claim that they will generally eat more vegetarian food every year. Emborg Vegan is currently found in more than 50 COOP supermarkets across Sweden."

Uhrenholt A/S



This Minneapolis founded non-dairy cheese brand is founded and operated by 3 women: : a scientist turned raw chef, a record store owner, and a nutritionist. 

Their process is similar to traditional dairy fermentation (of nut mylks), and only natural and organic ingredients are used: nuts, water, culture and salt. The fermentation of nut milks results in a smooth texture and authentic umami flavour.
